Nutrient levels in turloughs

There is concern about the potential eutrophication of turloughs within the Burren National Park. Please put any comments here.

  2. I studied nutrient levels and primiary production of 22 turloughs in the west of the country during one flooding season only (october 2006-May 2007). From the knowledge I have of the boundaries of the Burren National Park, only two of them are within the Park: Lough Gealain and Knockanroue.

This two turloughs are considered oligotrophic based on measured phosphorus and chlorophyll a concentrations over that flooding season. Like in the majority of other turloughs, phosphorus (rather than nitrogen) seems to be the main limiting nutrient of primary production in this turloughs.
